2d capstan lathe

Alfred Herbert began making tools and components for the Coventry cycle industry in Coventry in 1889.

The company became the largest machine tool company in Britain and claimed to be the largest in the world. The capstan lathe was used to produce shaped metal items.

The machine tools made by Alfred Herbert's were used in cycle, car and aircraft factories all over the West Midlands and indeed all over the world.

The tools for the lathe are held in a revolving turret or capstan. Once set up it was quite easy for a semi-skilled or unskilled worker to use.
